2 large serving plates, 4 dinner plates and faboluos tureen with underplate or serving plate.
Rare antique English Victorian (1880s) Oval Tureen by Keeling & Co (Late Mayers) Pattern "Essex" dinner set in a creamy white/ivory and a darker teal blue decorated with a scrolling floral design with gold trim. The tureen and plates are marked "Essex" with the kneeling figure and "K & Co B 1790 Late Mayers." We believe they were manufactured in about the 1890s. See pictures of the bottom markings. Absolutley beautiful rare set of antique earthenware pieces in perfect vintage condition.
Keeling & Co (Ltd) Burslem, England were earthenware and blue printed ware manufacturers at the Dale Hall Works, Longport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent from around 1886 to 1936. In 1905 the soon to become famous ceramics designer Charlotte Rhead was employed as an enameller. The partners were George Keeling, Joseph Keeling, Wilson Keeling and Thomas Keeling Rhodes. Thomas Keeling Rhodes retired from the business in March 1892. The firm was previously "James Gildea" and and subsequently "Dunn Bennett & Co". Trade marks include "LATE MAYERS", "LOSOL" and "LOSOL WARE" "The extensive works at Dale Hall (or Dale Hole, as it used to be written), founded in 1790 originally belonged to Joseph Stubbs - a successful manufacturer of earthenware during the 1822-5 period, who having retired from business, died in 1836. He was succeeded in about 1843 by Messrs. Thomas, John & Joshua Mayer, who from 1855 traded as Mayer Brothers & Elliot, and from them the works passed through the firms of Mayer & Elliot, Liddle, Elliot, & Co., Bates, Elliot & Co., Bates, Walker & Co., and Bates, Gildea & Walker to the firm of Gildea & Walker during the 1881-6 period."
Pieces bought from BBCH have had a previuos life, therefore may show signs of wear consistent with use and age.
